There are a great many things that can impact the efficient running of your solar energy system:

• Panel type and location on your roof
• Inverter type
• Location of your house
• Overhanging trees or anything that will shade your panels

However in in very broad terms, the payback period for a 3kWh system should be about 3.5 years - if it is running to maximum potential efficiency for 4 hours a day and has a nice north facing roof alignment.

BUT that is also going to depend on the feed in tariff rate of your local area.
